BONE BROTH (Even though you didn’t ask!) My girl couldn’t tolerate chicken or turkey, so we switched her to a “novel” protein, one she hadn’t been exposed to. We ended up with venison, and recently added some lamb. I think she can tolerate salmon, but I’ve only tried it in treats, so she doesn’t get much of it. And, her favorite treat of all time is Cheerios. (Weird dog!!!) Frito’s Homemade Dog Food Venison, Lamb, Veggies, and Pasta, w/JFFD Supplement Makes about 14-15 lbs. 1-1/2 lb rotini pasta (not whole wheat)2 lbs. ground venison1 lb. ground lamb1-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon1-1/2 Tbsp ground ginger24 oz. butternut squash, frozen24 oz. brussels sprouts, frozen24 oz. green beans, frozen7 oz. (204 g) cranberries1/2 cup sunflower or safflower oil1-1/2 Tbsp. JFFD Turkey DIY Supplement Cook pasta in 2 batches for 10-12 min., until past al dente. Drain and cool. While pasta is cooking, in 12-inch skillet, brown meat, adding spices when meat is no longer pink. Add cranberries, cover and cook until cranberries burst or are softened. Microwave frozen veggies according to package directions for 1,100 watt microwave, and cool. Food process veggies, one package at a time, in about 1/2 to 1 inch of water (not above fill line) until mostly processed or smooth. As they are processed, put them in the largest stainless steel mixing bowl you have. Then, process the pasta and meat mixture, and add to bowl. Add oil and JFFD Supplement. Mix all thoroughly, adding more water as needed, until well mixed and thick but still pourable. Spoon 1-1/4 lb of mixture into rectangular glass containers, using square container for any remaining. Put small container in refrigerator, and put the rest, two at a time, in the garage freezer. Stack carefully, making sure nothing is going to slide off. Prior to serving, defrost on small rack on counter for a few hours, then refrigerate. These directions are personalized for me, especially related to mixing bowl and container sizes. But, this does make a huge amount of good, so you’ll need a very large mixing bowl. See my links below for my mixing bowl and glass containers. She’s now eating about 7-1/2 oz. per day, which for her is a miracle. So, a batch will probably last me 4-5 weeks. Look up Just Food for Dogs DIY Turkey Supplement, and copy the Nutrition Label to give to your Vet. He or she may be concerned that this isn’t a 100% complete meal. It is, with the supplement. Bone Broth Recipe: (even though you didn’t ask!) Variables to not getting good collagen: * not doing vinegar soak*packing bones in too tightly*too much water*not cooking long enough I used 1/2 lamb neck bones and 1/2 duck feet for my first batch. My next batch will be 100% duck feet. Place bones in a freezer zip lock bag.Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar.Seal and marinate for 48 hours. Turn bag twice each day. Place contents of bag into slow cooker. Add water to cover bones. Cook 36 hours. This has to cook on a very low simmer, small, consistent bubbles, but not enough to break down the collagen. I know this can be done in a pressure cooker, but I haven’t tried it in mine yet (it’s brand new). Remove bones into a collander set over a bowl. Pass remaining liquid through a fine mesh sieve and into bowl. Pour liquid into storage containers.Refrigerate for 24 hours. Skim ALL fat from top of broth. Can be frozen. (I made ice cubes, and put them in a labeled and dated ziplock bag in the freezer). I take out 4-6 at a time, put them in a small glass prep bowl, and gently defrost them in the microwave. I add 1/16 tsp of kelp, 1/2 tsp Level 5000 Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplement, and 1/3 capsule of Visbiome Probiotic to her meal once/day. The bone broth and these specific probiotics were recommended by my girlfriend’s Vet. Her dog has a deadly autoimmune disease, which generally is fatal within a few weeks of diagnosis. But, her girl is doing great, so far, after a splenectomy, and several months.
