If you want to go freehand route then be prepared to spend well over 100 dollars. Most of use spend more than that on a single stone! With that being said Cheefercut sells a double sided vitrified diamond stones (400/100 grit) for around 100$. Also if you want an excellent 1 and done stone THELITE sells a 1000 grit vitrified diamond stones plus a strop for 100$. It cuts fast and leaves and excellent edge. However if it’s your first time freehand can be frustrating until you get that hang of it, probably 20 or more knives in before you find your groove and start getting quality results. Cheapest route would be a double sided diamond plate from Sharpal. It will still get you good results but deburring can be tricky without a ceramic rod and strop.
