Not true. It’s actually quite simple. With AMD GPUs on Linux, this little UGreen DP to HDMI adapter allows for CEC https://a.co/d/0a7URL1T

in bazzite portal, turn on "CEC sleep". After that it just works plug and play. Cec must be enabled in your tv its one of these 2 dongles https://amazon.com/dp/B0FQCF62CD https://amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 or any future dongle using Chrontel's CH7218A CEC only works on AMD gpu's

I used that one and had nothing but issues. I swapped to this one recently and it has been flawless https://a.co/d/07XQXzLB

Thanks for sharing the link! I bought this other Ugreen adapter, it arrives today, and the reviews are really good about it supporting CEC and VRR: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Unidirectional-Aluminum-Converter-Compatible/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 I wonder if it is a newer version of the one you shared? I might buy yours too and try it out and see if one works better than the other for my specific AV setup. Still need to finish my build, but yeah, this is a core part of the “console-like” user experience and I hope Valve continues to improve on this stuff on the software side.

Buy this instead.

How does this compare to the popular ugreen adapter used for this? https://a.co/d/073wOYCC

I was originally thinking all the same things as OP but when I discovered you can achieve this with a config file and a $15 adapter, I immediately started working on an AM5 build in a SFF case!!! Linus Tech Tips was completely wrong about this not being possible!!! Here is the Ugreen adapter you need, go ahead and read the reviews, most people mention that it makes CEC work: https://a.co/d/0hiBfubN I reserved a 512gb model and was planning to upgrade it (I already have a 2TB drive I bought on sale a while back). But now I’m just building instead. With SteamOS 3.8.1, Valve seems more committed than ever to support custom PCs on the software side. Proton is incredible. This is the post-Windows future I’ve been waiting for. Here’s my Steam Machine build which has a much faster CPU, double the RAM (with 2 extra slots for when it gets cheaper), double the VRAM, 2.5gb Ethernet, wifi 6e, and TWO extra M.2 slots for more ssds later when they also hopefully get cheaper. But even with no future upgrades, I’m absolutely crushing the Steam Machine on performance regardless. If you buy used/open box you can stay under $1049 and get way better performance. Is it a little more work? Yes, but I’m a gamer and I’m already somewhat technically inclined, I’ve build PCs before and it’s fun. In fact I’d say it’s a rite of passage. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7600X (bought used on fb for $100)GPU: Sapphire Pulse 9060XT 16GB (NewEgg sale for $399)RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR5 2x16GB 6000mHz (bought used on fb for $250)MOBO: Asrock B650M Pro RS WiFi ($99 on NE)PSU: MSI MAG A750GL 80+ Gold Fully Modular ($76 on prime day)CASE: Zalman Cubix ($29.99 sale at NE)Ugreen CEC Adapter: $15 (prime day sale) SSD: Samsung 990 2TB (already owned, bought for $99 back in 10/2023) TOTAL SPEND: $971 All of that power in a 6.3” x 12” x 14” package is good enough for me. The 6” cube form factor the Steam Machine is amazing, but I have a little more space than that in my media cabinet so I don’t care. I get just buying the little cube if you’re not technical at all, but $1349 is a huge amount of money to throw at your gaming setup right now. With a little bit of work you can do so much better. Still got lots of love for what Valve is doing though!

I'm jumping on this thread just to add some info. SteamOS 3.8.11 TV LG C9 GPU RX 9060XT UGREEN Adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 Note: this UGREEN adapter is a smaller form factor and it is cheaper than the other one being recommended with a braided cable. I was ready to try my hand at getting CEC to work again. What I found is that HDMI-CEC Just works for me with the steam settings, I didn't have to set up a script at all. I can control steamOS with my TV remote It will power on the TV when powering on the SteamBox. It will switch to the HDMI input for the SteamBox. Mainly posting this to point out the cheaper DP to HDMI adapter.

the ugreen dp to hdmi adapters are the most popular ones like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3?th=1 You would need an amd gpu and linux just like the steam machine for it to work, although I have seen some claims that it works with Nvidia gpus.

Reefame posted on r/steammachine6d

I have HDMI-CEC working on my PC running CachyOS with this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 it took me about 5 minutes to make it work, as CachyOS/Bazzite/SteamOS has support for CEC by default. Requires 0 technical know-how. Also supports wake-on-usb by toggling 1 setting in the BIOS. But I have to ask because I also feel like im taking crazy pills; why is CEC such a big deal? I went without it for close to 2 years and the only difference is that I had to spend less than 5 seconds picking up my Remote when I wanted to play, and again when I turned off the system. I only even bothered dabbling with CEC because I read that the specific adapter I was using supported it a couple of days ago. I dont feel like my life has changed much by saving me those 10 seconds

Reefame posted on r/steammachine6d

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 It also support CEC.

I bought a two pack of this Ugreen model with the Chrontel chipset that's whitelisted for VRR in Bazzite: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3?th=1 It works great on my LG C4 77" but is too unstable to use on my LG CX 77." Amazon has free returns, so it's not much of a risk if it doesn't work. It's also only $15 due to a Prime Day Deal (which expires tomorrow IIRC).

Yes, I am running this adapter https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Unidirectional-Aluminum-Converter-Compatible/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 on my machine to get HDMI-CEC and HDMI 2.1 support on CachyOS. The Steam Machine will not support HDMI 2.1 out of the box because it’s not available on AMD hardware on Linux. You need the adapter linked above or an equivalent to get full HDMI 2.1 support on Linux with AMD hardware

Reefame posted on r/steammachine1w

I mean you can, yes, but the smaller the form factor the more difficulty you will face when building it. You have to do a fair bit of research to ensure that the components fit in the case, but if you are willing to spend some time on it you can build a pc that will be vastly superior to the Steam Machine at that pricepoint. You can even get CEC support rather easily with an adapter. I use CEC through an adapter on my CachyOS-based PC. This is the adapter I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FQCGSWW3 The only thing you wont be able to replicate is the size. You can make it small, but not Steam Machine small

murderbymodem posted on r/pcmasterrace1w

I truly respect what the Steam Machine is doing. The form factor is amazingly small, and people underestimate the effort it takes to do a SFF / Mini-ITX build yourself. You deal with power supply cable extensions, PCIE riser cables, research the clearance of your CPU and GPU down to the millimeter, pay more money for a Mini-ITX motherboard than you would for an ATX motherboard, and you still don't end up with something as small as the Steam Machine. but I already have a small enough Ryzen 9700x / Intel B580 build in an NCase M1 at my TV, and paying $1000+ for worse hardware seems dumb. So I have been starting to dive down this rabbit hole again. I noticed that CachyOS has something for the PulseEight adapter in their repos. I plan to dig through my drawers and find the PulseEight adapter that I purchased many years ago and never got working properly. In addition, there is a UGREEN DP to HDMI adapter that apparently works with CEC and Bazzite according to an Amazon review from last month??? Not sure I trust it, but it's on sale today and I can always return it if that turns out to be misinformation... but yeah, as you can see, CEC on a normal PC has always been a very mixed bag, and if the Steam Machine can do it reliably, that is a unique selling point aside from the form factor.

thezero4 posted on r/bazzite1w

You can use this and get HDMI 2.1 and it added CEC support surprisingly for me in my bazzite install, it's just a UGREEN DP1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adaptor if you didn't want to click the link https://a.co/d/0eIlGzbt
