We use a stainless steel litter box. I technically bought a large cooking pan. It was deeper than the metal litter boxes. We use walnut cat litter. My adult son has the cat so he's not perfect about maintaining box. He does clean out daily. I don't notice any smells and I'm particularly sensitive to scents. Nothing sticks and it doesn't trap any smells. His cat is small only 7 lbs. So her "deposits" are small as well. You may need a larger box if your dad's cat is large. Good luck.
