Have you seen any gnats? They will do that to the roots. My mom used a product called Peter's Plant Food, but I don't recall seeing it in recent years. There is a product advertised called Peter's Professional, but I don't believe it's the same thing. Miracle grow makes a good house plant fertilizer. That's what I use. It's available in a liquid or granular product. I would recommend this. Miracle Grow is an excellent plant food. https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Gro-VB300526-Liquid-Houseplants-Including-Edibles-Instantly/dp/B0071E21ZU/ref=sr_1_11?crid=THVHRX07V6FH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.11mFRoMLHyOZCzU7I5UfHBaqhNoPPaXddyc8s5Bwu9dr8MmtTZBLGiikf-UTxPmXI_-cF5khzxAAjRssIKF_0Z5JcMx_7mf6cAcsLtBZagpkjf-OxaNNNQ5WSCJi6_vD9-4U_-_DAPJPIlY_yYpK_mRBUvgImYu0vAz2ZdXD1jaPi9uaDqUnVKwX0EC7O-ytZm5l5j7_nhChOXCRWk7SSJv3-nLDBRXyBZHgiaIkiNzOSnoGoOAlHvluKQUX-aneY1VarzGxJ-ggJN1Ip_2EAQRVK-8B3DqFw-UuUyarEJc.ct35AffkC18C76h3nVVHeS7vSU5quoG6w9TND6avNhc&dib_tag=se&keywords=miracle%2Bgrow%2Bhouseplant%2Bfood%2Bfor%2Bpothos&qid=1781678594&sprefix=miracle%2Bgrow%2Bhouseplant%2Bfood%2Bfor%2Bpothos%2Caps%2C138&sr=8-11&th=1 I would recommend removing & disposing of any roots that are rotting. If the underground parts of the stems are also rotting, I would cut them off completely, too. You can take a stem with no roots & place it in water & it will root. If the the bottle or vase is dark colored, it will root more quickly. Pothos likes bright light, but doesn't do well in sun. It can grow in ambient light in any room, but it will get leggy, meaning the stems will be longer & it will have fewer leaves. It'll grow much like a vine. If you have a window that has only bright light - a north or south facing window, it should be happy. If you don't have a window without sun coming in, position the plant a few feet away from the window, or choose a window that gets only morning sun. Afternoon sun is too strong. If it has some good roots, it's fine too keep in in soil, just cut off anything that is rotting. Or you can use a product like this & after treating the stems put them directly in soil. The plant will be bushier if it's in soil. https://www.amazon.com/Bonide-BND925-Bontone-Rooting-Fertilizer/dp/B000BX1HGC/ref=sr_1_6_pp?crid=3SZ6D3XJJJ1DL&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Tv-uuSMq_CbsIexCwxagCztqKWqTWJ05JSqVtEwHHehXVw99btJiNLWyaqeoH2KmcS2B92KRj5osGDMuaDfNgTdEj6ikljE37W29h-IQTM3d_8Jbq2MRvReT8egHWMmbu1BhcmozF-x8NJC9yYQIi73Xz6lXOCTFL448qvGHoSOKB7OMjBKex1zDetFTDCiDsKMSWnidBQGpOmk7M3g2SViX86o7I2tZNcolCKho0-yH3m-QaNheyKYwnpcLlSWWzJIk3iFRBwdRjpToSMna8DO-2NReiBgq3wfQmfxs74M.u4VQLFMrb6IJnYibHnODAVEn4f9DKJXLY-HmrM8eOGM&dib_tag=se&keywords=rooting%2Bhormone&qid=1781678391&sprefix=rooting%2Bhormone%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-6&th=1 If you decide to go back to using soil, give this a try. It has fertilizer in it & it will feed your plant for 3 months, I believe . It should say on the package, but I'm pretty sure, it will feed for 3 months, after which you'll need to start feeding monthly, or according to the directions on the bottle. You don't need to do all of the above. Most critical is: Remove anything that's rotting. Decide if you want to root in water or soil. a. If you decide to go with water, mix up some fertilizer & water, keep the fertilizer on the lighter side. If directions call for 1 teaspoon, go with 1/2 - 3/4 teaspoon. Your plant is stressed, so going lighter on fertilizer is better until it is well rooted. b. If you decide to go back to using soil, plant in soil if it has several good roots. If it doesn't have roots, treat it with the rooting hormone & then plant it. Lightly water. just until soil is moist. Let the soil dry out in the top 1-inch of the soil before watering again. You can also root it in water & plant it after the roots grow. Keep to the schedule of letting the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again, if you decide to plant it in soil again. 5. If you opt to keep it in a jar or vase, you'll just need to refill the water as the plant drinks it/it evaporates. Important: Throw out any soil you are currently using if you see any gnats at all. You may want to do that even if you don't see gnats because there could be a bacterial infection that has caused the roots to rot. If you develop a problem with gnats, you may want to consider using Neem Oil. It is all natural & food safe. https://www.amazon.com/Bonide-BND022-Pesticide-Organic-Gardening/dp/B007CRG4CW/ref=sr_1_7_pp?crid=N7XAT7E5REX8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.0arE6YdWf08fF4KxzwXEXbHO2fFfSuFtcOhHqwkNVR0PeW6l5TRvAeUalNAxvvt-xTGUlq-ijeCVT5W2cx2H3tln800-cekhwFfeqSfrqAeJqnloNBKiO_Kn_Va8hvqFMwCXND0LGiQwfSiQiEx5fL_P2yD8CTpA06ovBonoz5H6GxFWNNhn_dkVKQtLluIWFyp8aG5uDIooqgqtqojm18sq4eomfEdw9C8Vl6x2_hiehzrzJRDqYJNdbL9Cj0aFKbcPiayGaOXLU6durg5ycF9V9dRMfqrIqlj_5NTwEdg.u-J_aAIE6VCp7zmPwTYr_caSfNYtMcv1rvanVp63mGw&dib_tag=se&keywords=plant%2Bbug%2Bkiller&qid=1781680180&sprefix=plant%2Bbug%2Bkiller%2Caps%2C132&sr=8-7&th=1 You may find any of these products cheaper elsewhere. I just looked them up quickly on Amazon. Good luck!

Holy shit that is an insane pest infestation. I've never had it THAT bad but I've had these fellas before. I have no idea if yours is salvageable or not, but if you are willing to commit & dedicate yourself, it might be possible. Here are things that helped me: Give the entire plant a thorough hose-down. BLAST it. Obviously not enough to damage the plant, but you are gonna want to rinse off as much of these guys as possible. Spray the plant regularly with the following sprays: - Bonide Captain Jack's Neem Oil - Bonide Insecticidal Soap - Bonide Eight Insect Control This helped get rid of the pests on my hibiscus, however, you need to regularly keep up with it. The sprays have instructions on them that'll tell you the frequency you need to spray. I unfortunately was unable to keep up as frequently as it needed & the pests returned, so you need to be very proactive. Keep spraying even when it seems like they're gone. & DO NOT SPRAY WHILE THE SUN IS OUT!!! Direct sunlight on it while it's soaking in spray will fry your plant!!! I made that mistake a few times on some other plants of mine while starting out.
