Have you seen any gnats? They will do that to the roots. My mom used a product called Peter's Plant Food, but I don't recall seeing it in recent years. There is a product advertised called Peter's Professional, but I don't believe it's the same thing. Miracle grow makes a good house plant fertilizer. That's what I use. It's available in a liquid or granular product. I would recommend this. If the underground parts of the stems are also rotting, I would cut them off completely, too. You can take a stem with no roots & place it in water & it will root. If the the bottle or vase is dark colored, it will root more quickly. Pothos likes bright light, but doesn't do well in sun. It can grow in ambient light in any room, but it will get leggy, meaning the stems will be longer & it will have fewer leaves. It'll grow much like a vine. If you have a window that has only bright light - a north or south facing window, it should be happy. If you don't have a window without sun coming in, position the plant a few feet away from the window, or choose a window that gets only morning sun. Afternoon sun is too strong. If it has some good roots, it's fine too keep in in soil, just cut off anything that is rotting. Or you can use a product like this & after treating the stems put them directly in soil. Your plant is stressed, so going lighter on fertilizer is better until it is well rooted. b. If you decide to go back to using soil, plant in soil if it has several good roots. If it doesn't have roots, treat it with the rooting hormone & then plant it. Lightly water. just until soil is moist. Let the soil dry out in the top 1-inch of the soil before watering again. You can also root it in water & plant it after the roots grow. Keep to the schedule of letting the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again, if you decide to plant it in soil again. 5. If you opt to keep it in a jar or vase, you'll just need to refill the water as the plant drinks it/it evaporates. Important: Throw out any soil you are currently using if you see any gnats at all.
