I'm going for the negative answer here, but not for the reason most might think. A metal instrument this size and shape for a one-year-old is not a great idea. At one, there is less using the mallet and more picking up and dropping, not out of being destructive, but because that's the popular motor function at that age. There are other more infant-friendly instruments to go with. Try a little xylophone, or a heavy duty super sturdy keyboard. At four or five, the steel tongue drum is better. Let the kid's parents worry about the noise; you can buy the fun gifts.
