I make garments, not quilts. I like mail sorters, the kind with the horizontal cubbies, kinda like this, but mine has 12 compartments (3 columns, 4 levels each, each cubby is 9x12x3") and sits on top of my lateral file cabinet. I use a labelmaker to label the shelves so I can tell at a glance. I am trying to let the number of compartments limit my Works In Progress. I like to put smaller bits into the larger (gallon?) Ziploc-style clear baggies and they fit nicely The one that's really in progress, to the point where I don't want to fold up the fabric because I'll be using it Real Soon Now and don't want to re-iron it, gets magneted to the side of my fridge. I started with tote bags, but I disliked how they worked for me. I'd forget which projects are in which tote bag, etc. It felt disorganized, plus the tote bags were not a standardized size and they all needed flat space to sit on and flop over or keep each other upright.
