Not a comment on the curtains, but to add some interest and brighten to the room, you should add a color other than brown. Right now, the shades are brown, the floor is brown, the table, area rug, and lamp are all brown. Adding a light area rug, perhaps cream and sage green (depending on other colors in your home) like this, or more modern like this, and then adding a cream lamp shade, could really make a difference.
