This is my trash system: Left for trash, right for glass and plastic recycling. I wipe it out a few times a year, clean the tops and inside rim more regularly (honestly maybe once a month), and it’s never smelled. I live alone and take my trash out each week, the bins don’t get full enough to touch the top of the lid- if they do I clean the lids ETA it’s against the wall by my stove in my current house, In my apartment it was in a corner off the side of a countertop. I’ve never put it in a cabinet, pantry, or separate room
