First, I completely agree! Second, I collect vintage clothing. The secret here is Citric Acid. Use your usual laundry detergent, maybe a touch more than usual. Then, in the rinse, add a couple tablespoons of citric acid. I use this one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lemi-Shine-Food-Grade-All-Natural-Preservative/dp/B09QV4ZTGZ But any reliable brand works (as opposed to a mystery alphabet brand of white powder from amazon). If you just need a couple tablespoons quick, it is more expensive per pound, but Walmart carries it in the canning section. It is called Mrs Wages Citric Acid and it is exactly the same stuff. I've been able to take out even the most noxious thrift store smells this way. Sometimes it takes a couple washes, but it does the trick.
