Frayer models are great. Definitely use those. I also like the idea of an affix wall. But, I would call it a morphology wall as that includes affixes (prefixes and suffixes) but also roots. And root meanings may be most helpful in science. But, it sounds like you want comprehension and application, too. Have you heard of The Writing Revolution? It's a book that actually has strategies you can use in all areas and they are especially helpful in content areas, like science. I'd recommend you get the book. It has strategies like expanding kernel sentences to explain concepts. Yes, some of it is specific to things like grammar or essay writing. But, I think specifically strategies like "kernel sentences" and "because, but, so sentences" and the note taking strategies would be very helpful for you. They are not extra lessons to teach. You learn the strategies and then use them as you teach your content. It will get your students using the vocabulary correctly, but more importantly making connections between the terms and the concepts and applying them in ways that help them comprehend. Writing about concepts is a great way to get that comprehension. If you do get the book, get the 2.0 version. It has more graphics and examples, including in areas like science. It can be applied to older or younger students. What you describe needing is not just a vocabulary issue, but a comprehension and application issue. These strategies would help with that. The book is by Judith Hochman and Natalie Wexler. https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Revolution-Advancing-Thinking-Subjects/dp/1119364914
