I do grammar and vocab warm ups at least every other day with my 11th graders. I use The Chortling Bard, give my students 5 minutes to correct the mistakes, then we go over it as a class. I don’t give them the answers, I make them tell me what to fix and give hints if they can’t figure it out. I also explain the lesser known rules and give them tricks to remember it all as we go. Sometimes it really feels like it doesn’t help at all. They constantly make the same wrong suggestions, and some days, it’s like pulling teeth getting them to even try. The vocab is even worse. They very rarely can get the part of speech on the first try. I try to use context clues or breaking down the word to help them figure out the definitions, and if that doesn’t work, I direct them to a dictionary, but they just do not care.
