If it were me, I'd look at the Hero's Journey, sometimes referred to as the "Mono-Myth". Dan Harmon's Story Circle is a useful graphic to illustrate the concept. You could look at Beowulf (Maria Dahvana Headley's new translation is as accessible as it is beautifully crafted), Star Wars, or Miyazaki's Spirited Away to see how they work within the Story Circle/Hero's Journey. Is that kind of the direction you were thinking?
