I understand wanting to cover steak in a hot pan to help stop splatter, but there are better options than a pan lid. Something like this is a MUCH better option for helping to keep splattering to a minimum while not steaming meats: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M5J51QV If you do not have these and only have a pot lid, leave it off to the side so that the steam can still escape, alternatively place some chop sticks under the lid so that it cannot close and lets the steam out. It still won't be as good as a proper splatter shield, but it'll be much better than a sealed lid.
