Neither my metal comb nor my pin brush are expensive, but both work well for my needs. However, my slicker is the second one and man does it get full quick with the dead undercoat. The rake I use is great as well and it seems the upgraded from a plastic handle to a wooden one as well. My routine is 3x/week use the pin brush, comb, and then slicker. Once a month, or twice depending on how Bella's flanks look, I will give her a rake. Once a month she gets bathed, blown dry, and the rest of her grooming. The brushing and rake only take about 10 minutes and it keeps my floors and carpets fairly clean!

Our guy has the same hair type as yours. As others mentioned, your groomer may suggest a summer cut as your guy may be matted. Don't worry, happened to us too the first time. Honestly, we only grow our boys hair out in the winter. He would die with long hair in the summer heat (we still keep his ears long).
