Next Day Update: Removing the pillow topper seems to actually make the mattress softer. It's a pretty cheap, thin piece of junk, so I didn't expect it to do a ton to make the mattress softer, but it's crazy that it seems to become a layer of concrete when you lay on it! Even my partner (6'3", ~230 lbs), who likes a firm mattress, said it felt like a rock with the topper on (so it's not just me lol). Before I completely give up on the Layla and try to beg them to take it back before the 30-day trial they make you do is over, I ordered one more topper. If this doesn't do it, then I think I've given the Layla a very fair chance and I really will have to get a more expensive, softer mattress. Thank you to everyone for your replies so far!
