I'm no expert but I have a theory below (I'm a clinical geneticist who also does genetics lab diagnostics, and lurk here because I'm adjunct faculty in path): I have the same problem, severely, I even smell it the next day, like the odor is stuck on my nasal membranes. Even if no obvious decomp, i.e. patient died in hospital. Occasionally a pedi path will call me to come look at some congenital anomalies. Here's my molecular theory: As decomposition starts, organic acids cadaverine and putrescine are generated. These OAs bind to chemosensory transmembrane receptors encoded by the genes TAAR6 and TAAR8. I'm convinced I have a genetic variant that binds these OAs more tightly - very plausible since gene variants control severity for a lot of things, analogous to the supertaster gene variants, etc. OP, suggestions that have helped me greatly: yes the pathologists point and laugh at me, IDGAF I buy a specific disposable R95 respirator mask with a carbon filter made by 3M, made to filter out organic odors https://www.amazon.com/3M-Particulate-Respirator-Nuisance-Organic/dp/B008MCV5ZM/ Rinse my nose out copiously with saline nasal spray after leaving autopsy and removing mask mouthwash with strong flavor if possible/ time permits, change into scrubs first, and absolutely wear shoe covers and a couple of bouffant caps If possible/time permits, shower and wash hair before changing back. I also use a hair conditioner with a strong pleasant smell.
