Well yes. That’s the concern. Nothing wet. At most you can try to dry clean the exterior. There are some you should use only on the exterior, little cotton bags filled with rubber powder and granules. The material can get into the gutter or spine hollow though if you aren’t careful. These were originally sold as cleaning pads for pencil drafting on vellum and mylar. HERE is an example You can also use white vinyl drafting erasers. They have no abrasives. Also originally designed for erasing pencil from vellum and mylar without tearing the surface. MarsPlast is the gold standard. You can find them in-stock at paper stores almost always. Perhaps the best option is the type of dry cleaning eraser used by conservationists by the truckload. It is not impregnated with anything, but it had a slightly sticky feel and lifts dirt with less rubbing. You sort of pat the material clean with it. See HERE Note that I have made no effort at all to find the best supplier or lowest price. Or even US vs UK locations. These are just the first hits that turned up. The easiest to source will be the white vinyl eraser. The best for your purpose would be the crepe eraser.
