My winning formula for rough heels: Step 1: Use a Microplane foot file to grate off the bulk of the heel callous. Do it dry. These things are phenomenal. They remove a truly shocking amount very quickly, and it’s pretty hard to grate into the softer underskin, so you’re not likely to bleed. It *can* happen, so you should still be careful, but it’s a bit harder to grate to that point than you’d think. I’ve tried other files, and nothing compares to the Microplane. https://a.co/d/03j4LqE5 Step 2: Polish the heel after taking shower/bath with a glass file. A Microplane file gets you pretty smooth, but you still get little skin barbs that can catch fabric after they dry out a bit. Wet filing with a glass file removes all that and really evens out your heel reduction which makes it less likely to develop cracks or barbs as the callus reforms with time. You can also wet file with the glass file every couple of days to facilitate exfoliation. https://a.co/d/0hPJaq3w Step 3: Moisturize nightly for at least a week with a 40% urea cream. This can bleach-stain, so definitely cover with at least socks. You’ll get more absorption if you use silicone heel cups or Saran Wrap under the socks. Heel cups can be washed with hot water and dish detergent, dried and re-used. Amlactin or Eucerin would be pretty great because they contain exfoliants (lactic acid or urea) that will help slow down callous formation, but occlusive moisturizers (like petroleum jelly, lanolin, or shea butter-based ones) are also fine. Continue to use a glass file every few days. This should make it so that you only need to use a Microplane about once a month or so, and callouses will likely not get to the point where you need new sheets.
