Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I don't understand the appeal of slatwalls. They are expensive, and I don't believe most people actually change their garage layout often enough to warrant the "modularity" of such a system. A piece of 1/2 plywood, some screws and nails, and your favorite variety of generic screw in hooks are like 1/3 the price of a slatwall system. Biggest downside is you would need to paint the plywood for it to look as slick as a slatwall. When I re-did my garage I put 1/2" plywood on top of the drywall and painted it, and its awesome. Granted, I did it in 2016/2017 when plywood prices were low.
