Only thing I can think of is the lamp is feeding 120v to the pins, where the new ones expect it to be reduced to 12v. I know the same base size for two voltages exists elsewhere, blew up a few G4s finding that out and just helped another reader find 12 volt medium screw bulbs. And whaddaya know, that happens with this shape too.
