Well, I went from a Kurgo harness, which had the design you describe with straps under the armpits, to this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRBLF9BZ The "do not pet" patches are velcro, and you can just remove them or replace them with another message. I like the fit of this one for my dog as it's padded in the front and on the bottom, the straps reach around the middle of her body rather than the armpits, and it's not hard to figure out when you put it on. So that's a design I'd recommend. My dog just ignores it when it's on.
