I've done multiple repairs on my 2005 and 2004 cabrios over my 10 years of ownership, most issues related to wires. That is one symptom that I don't recall having, but I suspect it is related to wiring (making poor contact eventually to fail). I would run new wires from the cowl motor to the back behind the left passenger window. You will see there are multiple bends and I bet you will find some wires with breaks, making poor contact. If I recall, 6 wires and I would buy silicon in a bundle, something like this: https://a.co/d/0bMToWDV While you have the cowl motor area open, I would replace the plastic gear in the cowl motor with a metal one. Kits on ebay. Also check your cowl latches for cracks while you are there. Repair the cracks or replace the latches (also on ebay). Trust me, do all the repairs while you have everything opened up. Lots of great videos on YouTube. Also check that your hydraulic lines are seated properly in their slots by the trunk compartment motor.
