Not a cane one, but we had a plastic globe (something like this) in the 70s when I was growing up in Eastern Europe. Nobody used it though and even then I thought it would be only useful for the small balls of mercerized cotton thread my grandma used when crocheting doilies. (PS I wanted to repurpose it into a purse but my Mom stopped that creative idea :-( )
