The extra large are ok. I have a couple from when I first switched to stainless. I only use them for foster kittens now. I recommend the 3XL boxes. I have a couple of 20 lb boys and even for the kittens it's nice when they all want to potty at the same time. The XL seem so tiny in comparison! I wouldn't recommend just the stainless box without the plastic top because they just aren't tall enough for cats that like to pee close to the edge (or standing). I have a couple of the regular size stainless boxes with no plastic covers that I use to plant cat grass so my cats can lay and dig in it. Once I got them I realized pretty quick that they wouldn't work well as litter boxes for my cats. The cats and I absolutely love the larger boxes
