I used this for a couple of rugs i needed to stay in place... Small strip on reach l each corner... It works perfectly but wasn't too gentle on the underside of the rugs though... Use heat and patience to remove. https://a.co/d/0hhUsyiZ

Generally the pieces you see here (except the screws) will stay together when removed from the door, with nothing projecting from the back. So your suggestion is a good one! I’d go with a couple of small powerful magnets, or you can get some extremely strong double sided tape like below. https://a.co/d/08j3Ld6n
