If you can't afford the vet, I've had decent results with once a month "dots" that one applies in between the shoulder blades. It's not as good as the once-a-month pill medication, but it's decent. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Advecta-II-Large-Cat/765485655?wl13=5959&wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&veh=seo_sll&cn=google Capstar is an oral medication, but it only kills the fleas on the cats at the time. It's short-acting. You should probably get some and dose the cats once, then dose them again in a few days. That's IN ADDITION to using the topical flea killer.
