Weeds have a waxy coating on them and it beads up the liquid you spray. Surfactant breaks the surface tension and allows the liquid to stay as alot more fine droplets on the leaf and absorb better. I have read that dish soap works. Dye is just to help prevent spraying things twice, or missing something. Im not promoting anything, these are just from my order history.
