To ignore the birds nesting under the stairs, the you'll want to look for a camera with AI Person Detection rather than standard pixel-based motion sensing (which triggers every time a wing flutters or a shadow shifts). Two options I know of: Lorex 2K Wi-Fi Smart Lightbulb Camera (SL300) It features local edge on device AI that handles Smart Motion Detection. Specifically distinguishing humans from animals or blowing leaves. The key here is that the AI detection is done on the camera. So no cloud subscription is required. And in some cases, on device AI results in faster alerts. It records directly to a local MicroSD card (up to 256GB), so no monthly subscription is required. (Although SD Card prices are really high right now due to the memory shortage thanks to AI data centers. The smaller sized ones are more reasonable.) A slight downside to only recording on the camera's SD card is if someone steals the camera itself -- not that a landlord would ever do that -- you have no recording of it. A subscription is available to have cloud recording. Its field of view is a bit narrow at 92.2°. This likely won't be an issue if you just want to cover the door. It also features a pan-and-tilt motorized lens. So that can overcome the limited field of view in some cases.
