It's not permanent or really a thing, I think. But there's an issue with how we as a community talk about works. There are quite a few stories which are darker or have more adult themes which I really like, but usually when they're recommended people have to put things like "It's a bit _______, but..." or "It may not be to everyone's taste, but_______". I think we all want to recommend works which we know are safe, or at least aren't going to start a debate, so if you read certain topics you tend not to recommend them. When we do, we apologise for them or make excuses before we even say the title! I'm exaggerating of course; it's not always like that. But most people are more comfortable talking about something safe. This sometimes means thinking of who would read the original P&P - which has no cursing, very little angst, and doesn't really talk about serious topics in anything other than glancing satirical references. I guess what I'm saying is that the works you want do exist, but people don't talk about them as much as the others, and so it looks like they're not out there at all. As a cheeky self-plug, I write more adult books which may be the kind of thing you like. Here's my latest.
