Depending on your appetite for spirituality, there's a book aptly named "The Spirits' Book" that has some oddly on-point insights and metaphysical content that aligns well with experience and intuition. In this book it suggests our spirits are our fully expanded consciousness and our presence in this world we're limited in our mortal form and meant to take experience/insight from this world. Some experiences like sleep or some consciousness expanding drugs free our spirit Lessening the limits our mortal bodies impose on us. The experience can be anywhere from chaotic/random/confusing to profoundly meaningful. Though, as we return to consciousness in our mortal body the limits go back into place and we can loose a lot of whatever profound insights we gain. That's a dramatic oversimplification of what it has, but it's a very interesting read.
