It's not the wheels that protrude. It the tires lack of protruding that exposes the wheel to the curb first or very soon after rubber touches (and flexes) These help alot. But if you really 'mash it', they are plastic and will disintegrate and then your metal wheel is hitting curb. But for minor touches, they sacrifice themselves to save the wheel and are cheap enough and easy to put on and remove. And if you do have scrapes, they completely cover them up so only you know the wheel has rash.
