You want a seated scooter where you sit down, and have the kid stand up front. The kid will need some practice to become proficient at it. It's good if they already know how to ride the kid kick scooters. What works for me is an Inmotion Climber with the Segway G30 seat, which happens to fit on it perfectly. I been giving my kid a ride to his school since he's 7, and continue to do so now that he's 8. You may want to get a more powerful scooter for future proofing. On the other hand this is a proof of concept for you, so maybe for now just get a cheap scooter to try out. Try something like the Gotrax A5: https://www.amazon.com/Gotrax-A5-Electric-Pneumatic-Comfortable/dp/B0D5YCZXLM You sit on the seat, kid stands up front. You can actually wrap your legs around the kid. Go slow and practice with the kid until you both feel confident. Get the kid a full face helmet for maximum safety. Sitting has lower center of gravity for safety, and it's relatively easy to put your foot down if needed to stay balanced.
