These snips are cheap, helpful, and safe: https://a.co/d/04262HRz If their rods aren't super long, they should just be able to break them down and carry them across their handle bars. Or stick them in the straps of a backpack. The telescoping rods have never really taken off with most anglers, and there are probably good reasons for that. Daiwa and some other companies make travel rods that break down into three sections and go into a tube or case. Those could easily be carried over your boys' shoulders while riding a bike, and they function like their two-section counterparts. Edit: Realistically, whatever you get them in terms of a rod, they are young men, and they are not going to want to break it down and set it up between sessions, so they are going to carry it in one hand pointing out from their handle bars like they are jousting. That's what I did as a kid, and I have safely ridden a bike many miles like that.
