Yes, cutting off the plug was exactly what I had in mind. I did make clear in my OP that I'm willing to void a warranty. I'm NOT willing to burn down my house, though, so I appreciate both your expertise and your candor. There must be safe (and code-compliant) ways to connect stranded and solid wire. A quick search indicates there are set-screw connectors, split bolts, lugs... a number of options.
