Easiest and cheapest way to get started, IMO, is to use diamond sharpening sticks like these. The finish from these is a little 'toothy', but for most swords that's fine. I prefer to hold the stone and keep the blade stationary. You can also use waterstones, etc. Practice on a kitchen knife first to get a feel for it. Having said that, I do all of my sharpening on a 2x72 belt grinder these days. For swords, I'll use an A65 trizact belt running pretty slow in reverse, and sharpen edge trailing on the slack portion of the belt just above the platen (for a slight convex edge), until I raise a burr on each side. Then I switch to a CrO2 pasted leather belt to finish and remove the burr. It'll be shaving sharp after that.
