Really awesome that you’re reading and actually charitably engaging types of theology that are new and different to you. Kudos! That’s really the first step. That’s doing to others what you’d want others to do to you when reading your theology, if they came from a different tradition. I think you do a great job of summarizing Cheng’s position here. Queer theology is actually quite a big field, so when you hear iffy things, there are probably just as many queer theologians who disagree with them as agree. Just like how conservative or Baptist theology isn’t a monolith, neither is queer theology. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the rest of the book! I always recommend it as an intro to queer theology. It’s a little dated now, but it’s still strong—just deserves an update! If you’re interested in black or womanist queer theology, that’s an important field too! Pam Lightsey’s Our Lives Matter: A Womanist Queer Theology is very short and accessible. Also obligatory shout out for r/QueerTheology.
