It really sounds like they were bullying you a bit. Your costume was picked, which means that the judges thought your design has something to offer. Ignore them, or better yet, block them. As for your frayed seams, do yourself a favor and get some pinking shears. Add an extra quarter of an inch to your seam allowance. After you sew the seam, carefully cut away the excess with the pinking shears. Tailors and seamstresses have used that technique for centuries because it works really well!
