#1 thing is to THROW AWAY DULL DRILL BITS, or move them to a dull bit bin that you tell yourself you will sharpen later but never will. So many guys I work with have cases full of dull bits, or half full cases of broken bits. If you want to keep a drill bit case, buy a 2nd one and refill the main one when a bit gets dull or broken. I used to have a drill bit dispenser cabinet, which was also a great solution but didn't hold non-standard bits like you mentioned. I moved my drill bits to a toolbox drawer with Schaller boxes, and its been great. Only a good solution if you have the space for a large enough toolbox. My favorite part is the ease of putting things back - easy to open the drawer and throw the bits in the appropriate bin, no grabbing and opening cases and fitting bits in and out of the little plastic holding tabs.
