My 85 f150 I can just see the thing not working and replace it lol. You won't always be able to see it. Your F-150 can run badly and you won't always know why. You can't see a partially clogged jet without taking it apart. A car with OBDII will tell you what's wrong. There's a reason why tune ups aren't really a thing anymore. Old mechanical cars were finicky and took some guesswork. Modern computer cars self adjust and know what's going on at all times. A ~$50 handheld OBDII reader is your best friend as a shade tree mechanic nowadays. You can't pull up air/fuel ratios live on a mechanical carb vehicle or have it tell you which cylinder is misfiring. Between 2000-2015 or so is the sweet spot for easy to work on and reliable. 80s cars just weren't as reliable as 2000 era cars.

Yes, the DME will clear the code after 3-4 complete drive cycles, it may take this long for the DME to confirm the repair. A drive cycle consists of bringing the engine to operating temperature, and then cooling all the way down. You should just invest in simple scanner, that has many functions. This is a quality OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics 2) scanner, which is used by many DIY'ers. You need to buy a scanner, to scan for codes. Then just use Google AI mode, to decipher those codes. Enter the make model and year of your vehicle, and a brief description of the problem, along with any DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) you pull from the ECU (Engine Control Module). This will give you a fairly accurate description of what the issues are. This is a quality OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics 2) scanner, which is used by many DIY'ers.
