I had little WD 6tb Passport external drives to keep backup of media. As I was filling up my 20tb drives that were in use 24/7 the little WD drives where kept in a box stacked like DVDs used to be. The only time the 6tb WD passport drives where being used was when I was backing up the bigger drives each time new data was stored. So, the only run time they really got is when they got used to fill a new 20tb drive after a loss. It was time consuming and it did work, I still have backed up media on about 20 plus WD 6tb external Passport drives that only get used when needed! Sounds crazy I know but it worked better for me.
