Looks great! There are external battery replacers that do the same thing, rigging one into an existing USB cable is a neat integration and streamlining! https://www.amazon.com/T-HOT-Battery-Eliminator-Supply-Adapter/dp/B0891X52KQ/ for the one I use if anyone else is interested! The other way I've seen this done is tapping the power lines of the USB port and building a buck converter into the unit somewhere, I've got a friend who did this for one of our other friends who has an NE410 purely for burning and uses an E630 for playback.
Oh yeah, MDCon either had them made or was selling some someone had made, and I ended up with one of each. The first is a sidecar with the battery replaced with a 1.5v stepdown and a type-c port, purely for external power. (if you had a regular sidecar you could add https://www.amazon.com/T-HOT-Battery-Eliminator-Supply-Adapter/dp/B0891X52KQ/ or similar to achieve a similar result.) The second is that plus a little lithium battery, kinda like an external version of the lithium gumstick replacers. I keep meaning to do some more testing especially with the one with a battery, to see what playtime ends up being like. I like the external power replacer but the machines I have tend to have DC 3V input so with the IKEA KRUBBET I can just use normal DC 3V. I think they're neat but I end up just reverting to a 2450mah NiMH battery (IKEA's usually, which are rebadged eneloops) in my sidecars or (because I have every gumstick recorder minus the NE810 lolol) just using the DC 3V barrel port for power input. (Especially because, for recording lithiums don't really accurately tell you where they are on the discharge curve.) My biggest criticism is I'd kind of like to see what someone can come up with without using an existing sidecar shell. I've seen a few one-off ideas e.g. sidecar-but-18650 or sidecar-and-its-a-stand
I have the same minidisc recorder. I bought an adapter that’s basically a fake AA battery that’s connected to a usb cable. I just got it in mail this weekend, so I haven’t tried it yet, but I can give it a try and let you know. usb to AA battery adapter
What machine and batteries are you using? In my experience, Energizer 2000mah batteries are good for about six disc writes ona Type-S machines, and ENeloop Pros such as the IKEA LADDA 2450mah should be good for proportionally more (butI haven't specifically measured) The other option is most machines that run off a sidecar also have a DC 3V input available, using that with either the original, a replacement universal supply, or something like a RipCord could help. The potential downside of a lithium battery is you receive no notice if you're near the end of its discharge curve, it'll fail suddenly mid-burn. So I tend to recommend external power rather than lithium batteries, for recording, but a good NiMH battery charged should get you several discs worth of recording, even with some (but maybe not lots) of playback in between. (The measurements are sort of either-or, but you can get a mixture of usage out of each battery.) The other option I also recommend, for units with an AA bay but no DC input port: https://www.amazon.com/T-HOT-Battery-Eliminator-Supply-Adapter/dp/B0891X52KQ EDIT/add: This applies to lithium gumstick replacers as well, and those have the additional complication that some gumstick systems need a working gumstick that can accept a charge to work with their docks. (Panasonics in particular, but Sony also presumes this in the N1.)
