I generally try to pack two weeks of shirts--about 14 to 18 shirts--in my carry-on, and three to four pants (along with two weeks worth of socks and underwear) which (when packed) weighs about 30 pounds. But I do this by optimizing the weight of my pants and shirts: I found a brand of cheap t-shirts for men that are cut out of extremely light weight material, and I bought light-weight pants from REI that are designed for hikers. Essentially I have a 'travel' wardrobe consisting of very thin, light weight shirts and pants that allows me to pack two weeks worth in about 15 pounds. (The rest of the weight are socks, underwear and toiletries, as well as the lightweight bag itself.) All this comes in around 25 pounds. For traveling to cold destinations I usually pack long lightweight shirts, throw in a couple of light-weight sweaters, and pack a windbreaker and wear a jacket. That often brings my total weight to around 30 pounds. If you're willing to spend the money, hiking clothes are great because they're designed to be as light as possible.
