The Unkindness by V. Tsin - almost literally a monster on a leash, though the exact nature of her monstrousness is a secret that is worth learning while reading the book. The leash is held by a notorious secret agent (the setting is loosely Cold War era) who uses the MC’s power when needed and is also the love interest. Just be aware, while the MC is funny in her narration, the book can also be very dark and it’s very BDSM focused, the MC is a masochist.
