You could try the ‘ATG split squat,’ which I find does not hurt my knees at all. I do them with my front foot elevated, which is easier. The Poliquin/Peterson/Patrick step-ups have also worked well for my knees. I highly recommend a slant board for knee work. I got some inexpensive wedges like these and they work just fine. They change the angle of the exercise, which makes it easier on your knee (less pain). That allow you to complete more reps (or any reps) when previously the pain was a limiting factor.
