A limit switch with a long arm might work laid horizontal facing towards the back. When the mail is pushed in the slot, it hits the arm engaging the switch. Connect it to a dry contact device like a door window sensor which has remote connections , I've also cut the end off a water sensor. My mailbox is about 10 meters away so I ran cat 6 wire buried a few centimeters along the driveway / grass edge into the garage connected to an esp8266 with wifi. https://a.co/d/0a3d7o6i . I believe they have ones with longer arms which might work better for your needs.
