Start with a planted tank with a betta, or small breed of crab, lobster, or snail... I would stay away from pairs of anything since breeding isn't your goal and unfair in a 10 gallon. You should seriously consider where you're dorm is and your access to water. Fish tanks are actually a real pain in the ass and expensive to maintain... Not to mention set up and break down. If you leave school during breaks you'll need a fish sitter. If you're hometown is really far from your school, I think it's unethical to have any pet since you won't be able take it with you.
