I've had some experience with this and have owned various types. My overall opinion is it is worth it. https://a.co/d/00UyrkiU ^ This metal one was my least favorite. The 3 piece legs are individually adjustable which seemed good on paper. But you can easily set it up in reverse and have your laptop topple over. Also my laptop would heat the metal and it would get very hot. https://a.co/d/0hYG9lUt ^ This bamboo stand I liked, it even had a small drawer that I would keep my USB drives/a spare pen in. I liked the bamboo bc it didn't heat up like the metal frame and the legs could adjust. The cons with this one was that if I got up id have the move the whole thing out of the way. Aside from that it was a solid buy, just had the extra step of folding the legs when putting away. (If you raise the legs and also raise the laptop panel it becomes a bit big in size with a 15" laptop ontop. ) https://a.co/d/03Kvp7gV ^ My recent buy and probably favorite is this simple over the lap stand. Pros I would say is its easy to adjust/move and comfortable in the lap. You can get it with a hand rest or not. It hase a built in mouse pad and a little dock to mount your phone. The padding on the bottom makes it comfortable in the lap. After seeing this type of lap stand and over looking it for a bit of time, I did mentally kick myself for not buying it sooner. It definitely made sitting on the couch or in be much more comfy I haven't had a fan built in on any of my laptops but I think thats bc I try to limit the amount of cable or things needed to be charged. Hope the post helps.
