African violets for your first houseplant is umm fun… 😅 they’re notoriously finicky but I’ve kept mine alive and producing flowers for about a year now and can tell you what I do. They’re one of my favorites now that I’ve got their conditions right! Light: Do NOT give them too much sun or they will crisp up. I have mine in a north facing window with good light exposure and they’re thriving but I’ve also kept them about two to three feet away from a south facing window and they did well there too. Just don’t let direct sunlight hit their leaves. Soil: if they’re not already planted in soil specific for African violets, get some and repot them. Fertilizer: I use a specific fertilizer for African violets and use it once or twice a month in the spring/summer, less in winter. The directions say once a week for the product I use but I feel like that’s too much personally. Pots: I bought a self watering pot set for mine and it’s worked great to keep them consistently moist but not soggy which they prefer. Pruning: when the flowers die and dry up I cut them off as well as any old wilty leaves. This probably isn’t recommended but it works for mine and I always have new leaves growing 🤷🏻‍♀️ Here’s a list of everything I use: Pots: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DPY44MZS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share (Tip with these pots, don’t fill them up all the way unless you’re leaving for a long trip. I just fill them above the 2 line and check them every couple weeks. They seem to drink more in the summer.)
